Recap of Illinois’ Quarterfinal Victory:

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Terrence Shannon Jr. led the No. 13 Illinois Fighting Illini with 28 points, overcoming a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat Ohio State 77-74 in Friday night’s Big Ten quarterfinal.

The Buckeyes had taken a 71-68 lead after Jamison Battle’s clutch 3-pointer with just under two minutes to play, but free throws from Shannon and Coleman Hawkins secured the win for Illinois. Shannon added two more free throws in the final seconds, and despite a last-second 3-point attempt by Battle, Ohio State fell short.

Key Performances:

  • Illinois (24-8): Dain Dainja contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, while Ty Rodgers added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Despite a slow start, Hawkins finished with seven points, seven rebounds, and key defensive plays in the final minutes.
  • Ohio State (20-13): Bruce Thornton recorded 20 points and 10 assists, while Jamison Battle led with 21 points.

Illinois now advances to face either Indiana or Nebraska in the semifinal on Saturday.

Ohio State, on the other hand, hopes their recent late-season surge is enough to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament, with selection Sunday determining their fate.

Post-Game Remarks:

Illinois coach Brad Underwood praised his team’s resilience, especially Hawkins’ crucial plays in the final stretch. “Those were winning plays that keep us in the tournament,” Underwood said. He also noted how the challenge of trailing by double digits late in the game came at a crucial time as they push deeper into March Madness.

Meanwhile, Ohio State coach Jake Diebler, leading the team since Chris Holtmann’s mid-season departure, remained optimistic. “Our guys have played their way into the conversation,” Diebler said, hopeful of postseason opportunities.
